Help Joplin's Young Musicians

Music 4 Jeremy's Cherubs and its partner BAC Horn Doctor are assessing the needs in Joplin. We will dedicate this summer's contributions to music students whose lives have been changed in Sunday's horrific tornado. Donations can be made at the 3rd Annual JFrye Funfest on Saturday June 18th, or at the bottom of the contact page.

M4JC Instruments travel to Guatemala

Theresa Jones is a member of the Rotary Club of Overland Park.  Her trip was part of Heart to Heart, an international aid organization that began in Olathe, Kansas. Theresa had met the young boy with the saxophone on a previous trip and requested that M4JC send a newer sax to replace his that was almost unplayable.  M4JC also sent a flute, a clarinet, a trumpet, and two recorders, all that had been donated then reconditioned by our partner, BAC Horn Doctor.

In Memory of Jill Mullin

Jill Mullin, born February 5, 1980, grew up in Overland Park, Kansas and developed an interest in music early in her life, beginning piano lessons at  the age of 7. As she grew up, her skill and passion continued to develop as she performed at numerous recitals, for school and church functions, at her grandmother’s nursing home, and even attended  the Midwestern Music Academy at the University of Kansas. Jill’s love for the piano was a cornerstone of her life and the sounds of her performing works by Beethoven, Chopin and various others could be  heard often in her family’s home.
A tragic accident befell Jill in February 2000 when  she collided head-on with a semi-truck on a drive  back to Kirksville, Missouri, where she attended  Truman State University. Jill suffered a traumatic  brain injury. As a result, she fought through many  years of rehabilitation to redevelop a number  of  physical capabilities. Even through her brain injury, one of the abilities that Jill maintained was her talent of playing the piano, specifically remembering some of the complicated pieces that she knew by memory before the accident. Playing the piano became part of Jill’s rehabilitation process, and music proved again to be a vastly important part of her life. Jill passed away in her sleep on August 14, 2010. To commemorate her lifelong love for music and the piano, her family requested that Jill’s friends and family make memorial contributions to Music 4 Jeremy’s Cherubs.
If you would like to make a donation in Jill's memory, a donation link can be found on the contact us page.  Donations can also be mailed to P.O. Box 13523 Overland Park, KS 66282-3523.  Please make checks out to Music 4 Jeremy's Cherubs.

Saxophonist's legacy lives on in school band

By JOE ROBERTSON,

The Kansas City Star

The 12-year-old girl reached for the clarinet’s bell-shaped end first.

She drew it out of the felt-lined case, unsure what to
do next.

“Now this,” classmate Diego Lee said, handing Da’Treona Friday one of the instrument’s barrels, sleek and black with silver tabs and valves.

She gingerly pressed the pieces together, joint by joint. Then the mouthpiece. Then the delicate ligature that would hold the reed.

“Don’t squeeze on these,” Diego said, watching closely. “You’ll break it.”

For a long time, the Banneker Charter Academy in Kansas City had wanted a band, but had no instruments and no means to start one.

Across the state line, the family of Jeremy Frye sought a way to remember a saxophonist who had planned to become a public school music teacher before he died of a brain tumor at age 23.

Here, at Banneker, the two aches found relief.

Jeremy Frye’s fiancee, Jamie Frye, was watching this week as the students put together flutes, trombones, trumpets and clarinets — many of them handling instruments for the first time.

The Jeremy S. Frye Music Room

The new Benjamin Banneker Charter School Band played its first performance at the school’s PTO Awards meeting on July 30.  Pianos and an assortment of percussion, woodwinds, horns, and violins donated by Music 4 Jeremy’s Cherubs produced a good sound.  Director Jim Neihart was pleasantly surprised given the short preparation time.  Student interest is running high and more instruments are scheduled for delivery in September as more and more students are added to the band.  The M4JC Foundation was recognized for the donations and an announcement was made that the band room is now known as the “Jeremy S. Frye Music Room.”
